The medical procedure foam sclerotherapy is used to treat varicose veins and spider veins. This minimally invasive procedure involves injecting a sclerosant solution directly into the afflicted veins. The sclerosant irritates the veins’ interior lining, causing the veins to collapse and eventually disappear.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

  1. Preparing for the operation: The patient is positioned supine, and the medical professional cleanses the epidermis around the targeted veins. The provider may use a magnifying device or a special light to see the vessels more clearly.
  2. Injection of the sclerosant solution: The healthcare provider injects the sclerosant solution directly into the targeted vessels using a fine needle. The solution causes the inner membrane of the veins to become inflamed and adhere together by irritating them.
  3. Vein closure and absorption: The injection of a sclerosant solution causes the vein walls to collapse and seal shut. This closure stops the passage of blood through the affected veins. Over time, the body absorbs the closed veins naturally, and they progressively disappear.
